Open Rank Clinical Faculty - Medical Education (Faculty Lead for Clinical Skills and Course Director) (Finance)
This faculty will serve as a course director in the Physician, Patients, and Populations (PPP) Course, which spans 60 pre-clerkship weeks with 4 hours of weekly instruction. This course is critical to our mission of preparing physicians to deliver primary care in underserved communities with an emphasis on care that is evidence-based, high-value, and team-based. Topics within this course include physician-patient communication, physical diagnosis, medical interviewing, clinical reasoning and decision-making, professionalism, medical ethics, social determinants and health disparities, population health, health informatics, quality improvement and safety, health systems and policy, inter-professional team-based care, cross-cultural care, behavioral health, and evidence-based medicine. The faculty position will lead activities related to clinical skills, which includes interviewing, physical exam, documentation, and simulation.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching (1-page), student evaluations, and names and contact information of three references. Applicants must have a track record of excellence in interactive teaching. Experience in medical education is preferred.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Responsibilities: Duties of the position will include, but are not limited to Curriculum Development, Content Delivery, and Scholarship (75%)
o Serve as a course director for PPP and other relevant courses
o Develop and deliver the PPP course by collaborating with faculty at the college of medicine and university as well as the broader Houston community
o Partner with the Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL) to develop, deliver, and assess simulation activities
o Develop and deliver clinical skills sessions in PPP, including directing and facilitating small-group learning sessions and other active, applied learning and assessment strategies.
o Develop and oversee formative and summative assessment of student performance.
o Assign and submit final grades
o Identify, coordinate, and evaluate opportunities for student scholarship and service learning opportunities
o Conduct ongoing and annual evaluation to assess effectiveness and areas for improvement.
o Share evaluation outcomes through internal reports, conference presentations and publications
o Identify, orient, develop, and provide feedback to faculty in the course
• Service Related to TJFFCOM (5%)
o Participate in medical school accreditation activities
o Provide constructive feedback to mentees, staff, and students
o Contribute to relevant TJFFCOM committees
o Foster collaborative and supportive relationships with colleagues and students
• Clinical (20%)
o Evaluate and treat patients
o Maintain accurate electronic medical records
o Participate in interdisciplinary team-based care
Full-Time: 1 FTE
Rank and Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic college of medicine
• Board certification
• Medical Licensure in the State of Texas, by the start date
• Experience with an electronic health record
• Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
• Ability to succinctly and effectively convey complex ideas through oral and written communication
Preferred Qualifications:
• Board certification in a primary care specialty
• Experience teaching topics included within PPP and administrative responsibilities within an academic environment
• Experience teaching medical students
• Experience building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational or research objectives
• Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curriculum
• Experience with curriculum development and evaluation
• Experience with survey design and data analysis
• Experience using different teaching methods which might include case-based learning, 'flipped classrooms', problem-based learning, interactive large group presentations, and audience response systems
• Five years' experience providing clinical care
Consistent with all other appointments within TJFFCOM, this is a non-tenure track position.
